The present work objectified to elaborate thematic maps, using remote sensing orbital products and the geoprocessing technics, that showed the space-temporal evolution of the vegetal covering of the municipality of São João do Cariri for the period from 1987 to 2004. The municipality of São João do Cariri is located in the Microrregião Cariris Velhos, in the northeastern semi-arid of the State of Paraíba and occupies an area of 697.60 km2. The methodology was based on the use of Landsat-5 orbital images, obtained in different dates and on image interpretation techniques, beyond the use of the cartographic maps of the SUDENE and data of field work. The maps had been elaborated on the software SPRING 4.2, using the supervised classification of segmented images and edited in module SCARTA. The results had shown that was an increment of the vegetal classes covering of semi-open open and open one + exposed soils in 19.44% and 7.92%, respectively. The more preserved classes dense semidense and semidense-semi-open had suffered reduction along the study period in 16.36% and 11.04%. These results are related to the intensive land use by extensive cattle raising, as also for the lack of income of the agricultural population that without option uses the vegetation as firewood. |
