The municipality of Taperoá has a physical base of about 639.874 km2 located in the central region of Paraiba State in the Meso-Region of Borborema, Micro-Region of West Cariri. With altitude ranging from 650 to 1000 m, rainfall of 505 mm per year, the area suffers the influence of warm and dry climate with rain in short periods and prolonged dry season. This study aimed to generate information on the evolution of threats, vulnerabilities and patterns of risk. The methodology was based on temporal analysis of orbital images TM / Landsat - 5 for the dates of June 17, 1984 and July 16, 2005 and data field. The results indicated that for the period 1984 to 2005 the vegetation cover was reduced. The vegetation has been largely decimated, causing serious loss of soil, providing siltation of rivers, making it more difficult to the sustainability of local ecosystems. The classes of cover critical care and semi-exposed soil increased significantly in 2005, which together account for 329.87 km2 representing a large amount of short covering and protecting the soil.Key-words: land degradation, sustainable development, semi-arid.
