Inhoud: The biodegration of the stillage settled in channels and tanks after fertigation liberates foul odors that are inconvenient to the surrounding population. The gases liberated during the decomposition process are unhealthy, particularly the ammonia, the sulphide and the mercaptans, which are also derived from the sulphur present in the composition. In order to accelerate the biodegradation process of stillage, minimizing odor liberation, an organic compound - EM - effective microorganisms, was inoculated. At the location where the experiment was performed, three treatments were prepared, in triplicate: one working as witness, with no products inoculated (T1), one containing EM in a 1:20.000 dilution ratio (T2) and another containing EM in a 1:10.000 dilution ratio (T3), for six months. The experiment was monitored through pH analysis, Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD5), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and microbiological analysis. Among treatments, there was progressive pH increase, with an initial mean of 4,67 and a final mean of 9,0; there was significant BOD5 and COD removal, and the analysis for standard counting of strictly aerobic mesophile microorganisms and viable facultative ones, as well as of heat-tolerant coliforms, showed reduction in the number of colonies. At the end of the experiment, total coliform analysis revealed a drop in treatments T2 and T3 and an increase in treatment T1. The biochemical analysis had no significant variance among treatments. The great volume of rainfall observed while the experiment was being performed must be pointed out.
