Este artigo apresenta resultados de uma pesquisa sobre o uso da conjunção mas, tomando-se como base estudos realizados por Ducrot (1984) e Schiffrin (1987). Consideram-se as relações adjacentes às estruturas mais diretamente tecidas por essa conjunção, especialmente em textos de teor opinativo. Para o presente trabalho, foi selecionado o texto Muita informação, pouco conhecimento, divulgado no Jornal Observatório da Imprensa. Este texto, a exemplo de tantos outros, abarca usos recorrentes do mas não previstos tradicionalmente, já que concretizam atos ligados a asserções, as quais estão inseridas em determinados pontos da cadeia textual. Refere-se, aqui, mais propriamente, ao movimento argumentativo estabelecido pelo conector diante de enunciados vizinhos, tanto os anteriormente apresentados quanto os inseridos na seqüência.This article shows the results of a research on the use of the conjunction "but”, based on studies carried out by Ducrot (1984) and Schiffrin (1987). The relations adjacent to the more direct structures built by this conjunction, especially in opinion texts,are considered in this study. The text “Muita informação, pouco conhecimento”, published in the “Observatório da Imprensa” newspaper, was selected for the present work. This text, like many others, includes recurrent uses of “but” not traditionally predicted, since they are used for acts linked to assertions, which are inserted in certain points of the textual chain. It is referred here, more properly, to the argumentative movement established by the connectorin face of the nearby utterances, both those previously presented and those inserted in the follow-up.
