Inhoud: Children find themselves included in custody evaluations in a variety of ways, sometimes to their dissatisfaction and discomfort. Even when children wish to have a voice in custody matters, they may shy away from the transparent nature of the process. Forensic evaluators seek informed consent from adults and assent from children who participate in evaluations, and that process includes a description of the limits of confidentiality. Children may not fully comprehend their role in an evaluation, the purpose of the evaluation, or the limits of confidentiality. In this article, we offer a review of relevant developmental processes that explain children's incomplete comprehension or miscomprehension of the limits of confidentiality. We offer practical clinical forensic strategies for what to do when children do not fully appreciate the limits of confidentiality in custody evaluations, with specific emphasis on how to respond to children's requests to retract what they have just said.
