The interconnected information technology (IT) systems on which the world is becoming increasingly dependent are very complex, and becoming more complex every day. This complexity makes IT systems difficult to manage, maintain, and control, and results in many unexpected outcomes as various elements interact in unforeseen ways. One of the areas in which this has the greatest impact is security. The complexity of IT systems gives attackers many ways to exploit weaknesses and unexpected interactions, and makes it very difficult for legitimate users to effectively secure these systems. |
