Coesite, a high pressure polymorph of quartz, has been shown to exist in boulders coming from the Lake Mien structure. Earlier this was interpreted as of volcanic origin but the finding of coesite supports the theory that the so called volcano in Lake Mien has been formed as a consequence of a meteorite impact. The difficulties of finding suitable boulders for the identification of coesite are discussed and are thought to be due to: (1) a bias in the collecting of the samples, (2) fragility of the material which is very easily weathered, (3) derivation of the available samples from the fallback material. Metastable high pressure minerals might in many cases have reconverted to stable phases. |
