A method of measuring the particle size distribution in clays using photo-sedimentation is first described and the importance of such knowledge for the understanding of the flow properties of clay slips is illustrated. Measurements of the velocity distribution of such suspensions contained in the annulus between concentric cylinders are used to show how the viscosity varies with the rate of shear. Finally measurements of the attenuation of an ultrasonic beam in sediments of different mean particle size are reported. |
