Two sets of polished thin sections of four different rocks were partly covered with PuO2 and kept for ten months in 'dry' and 'wet' environment, respectively. Examination of the samples in a polarizing microscope revealed no visible damages for the 'dry' samples. Those kept in 'wet' environment, however, did show serious damages which, in some cases, led to the complete destruction of all mineral phases. Possible mechanisms as well as consequences for storage of radioactive waste are discussed. |
