Inhoud: The Koli layered mafic sill in eastern Finland is about 60 km long and 340 m thick. It is located in the Archaean basement, but trends parallel to the overlying Proterozoic quartzites. Although the sill is peculiar in its parent magma and crystallization, it is a typical example of the 2.2 Ga old magmatism in the eastern and northern parts of the Fennoscandian Shield. The sill has features of a layered intrusion containing a chilled margin, a marginal series, and a layered series. The magma was differentiated from a single magma pulse by fractional crystallization to form the rock association of the layered series which grades from wehrlites through clinopyroxenites and gabbros to granophyre below the upper marginal zone. The modified differentiation index varies from 20 to 80. The chilled margin shows the composition of the parent magma, which was rich in Fe and LREE while being poor in Al (mg* = 0.59, Al2O3/TiO2 = 5-6, and Ti/V = 31).
