Sulphur isotope ratios in a pyritic sulphide mineralization associated with Svecokarelidic (2.2-1.8 Ga old) spilitic rocks at Naatikkalampi in Kuusamo, NE Finland, have been determined. The results of 18 determinations show a relatively narrow range of variation from +2.8% to +3.4% relative to the Canon Diablo standard. The mean value is 3.1%. The origin of the sulphur in the sulphide phase is discussed. It is concluded that the sulphur isotope ratios of the mineralization are consistent with an igneous hydrothermal model suggested for the quartz-sulphide veins by field evidence. As there is not enough knowledge concerning the sulphur isotope ratios of Precambrian seawater, a sedimentary or a bacteriogenic origin of sulphur can, however, not be excluded on the basis of the results. |
