Coming Out in the AIDS Era

Title: Coming Out in the AIDS Era
Author: Locke, Carl
Appeared in: Journal of gay & lesbian social services
Paging: Volume 8 (1998) nr. 1 pages 1-12
Year: 1998-05-20
Contents: HIV continues to hold a unique place within the gay male community in the United States. HIV/AIDS has become merged with personal, social, and sexual identities in gay men in ways not replicated in other social groups. Young gay men who have come out since the mid-80s up to today, must do so in an environment where HIV and gay identity are merged. Sexual exploration and a growing sense of belonging to a community coincide with the struggle to remain uninfected with HIV. This is no easy task when we begin to examine the urban gay community, seroprevalance rates, and the unconscious connections to HIV and gay men. This article is a personal story describing a young gay man's struggle with coming out during the era of AIDS and confronting these difficult issues.
