As AIDS prevention strategies focus more on the psychosocial pressures of gay men who are HIV-negative, group work with this population has proved to be a healing antidote to the ongoing psychological toll of the AIDS pandemic. In an environment in which the link between sex and survival has been turned upside down, groups for these men offer invaluable forums for normalizing fears, clarifying values, disseminating information, and building a community of concern that mitigates overwhelming feelings of loss and isolation that might otherwise lead to self-destructive behaviors. Of particular importance in this model will be stage specific interventions. Recognizing how to utilize an integrative approach within a time limited framework may give group leaders the best opportunity for exploring the multi-issue concerns related to both staying uninfected and maintaining psychological well-being. |
