The experience of being young and gay or lesbian has been seriously neglected in research and service provision in South Africa. This qualitative study aimed at exploring and describing the experience of coming out from the personal narratives of 18 gay and lesbian youth. Due to the marginalised nature of the sample, a variety of purposive sampling techniques were utilized. The paper explores the multiple levels of institutionalized homophobia reported by this sample as they navigate their coming out process in post-Apartheid South Africa, with specific reference to denigration, rejection and social isolation. Implications for social work practice in supporting these marginalized young people are considered. |
