An AIDS caregiver constellation is an informal helping network of people who have coalesced around a Person with AIDS (PWA), providing care for that person, while simultaneously giving support to each other. Based on a case study of five constellations, the authors describe the formation and functions of these care-giving groups. Constellations mobilized to help fill a void resulting from inadequate public and private insurance and services, and lack of family involvement. Comprised of long-term male and female friends and significant others, constellations coordinated their efforts to provide household and personal care. The existence of AIDS caregiver constellations challenges current assumptions and past research about care giving. The authors urge social workers to consider the role and needs of multiple, non-traditional caregivers. |
