Stunted stocks of the freshwater crayfish, yabbie, Cherax albidus, were eradicated from a hillside pond used in extensive yabbie aquaculture by addition of the synthetic pyrethoid, fenvalerate. Fenvalerate degraded quickly in the pond water and was undetectable (<0.02 µg/L) 5 days after application. Yabbies accumulated only trace levels of fenvalerate during their fatal exposure. The acutely toxic conditions in the pond were temporary, lasting between 5 and 12 days. Small yabbies (10-20 g) introduced to the pond 49 days post-treatment showed good growth, with some animals reaching prime marketable size (> 50 g) within five months. |
