Fingerling channel catfish, Icturus punctatus, starved for 21 days and then exposed to nitrite (NO2), developed methemoglobin levels about 25% higher (P < 0.01) than fish fed a commercial diet at a rate of 2% of body weight for the same period. This may be of practical significance because the ovvurrence of nitrite-induced methemoglobinemia is highest during the cooler months of the year when some producers choose to discontinue routine feeding of fish in ponds. |
