Studies were conducted in 1987 and 1988 to determine if diet affected the prevalence of dorsal skin lesions characteristic of a small percentage (0.01) of steelhead, "Oncorhynchus mykiss," at the Hagerman, Idaho, National Fish Hatchery. Each year, two feed regimens were followed for about 24 weeks. In 1987, fish were initially fed Rangen's soft-moist for 25 days. Then one group was fed Silvercup dry diet supplemented with 12% menhaden oil, while the other was fed the same diet supplemented with 12% herring oil. There was no significant differences in weight gain, morality, condition factor, feed conversion, incidence of lesbians, or feed cost/kg of fish produced (P > 0.05). However, the dorsal fins were significantly more eroded, and hemacrits were lower for fish fed Silvercup dry supplemented with herring oil (P < 0.05). In 1988, steelhead were fed either Rangen's soft-moist for 25 days and then switched to Silvercup dry or were fed Silvercup dry excusively throughout the 24-week trial. There were no significant differences between fish in any of the variables monitored.
