  Grandparents' Depictions in Children's Literature:

Title: Grandparents' Depictions in Children's Literature:
Author: Janelli, Linda M.
Appeared in: Gerontology & geriatrics education
Paging: Volume 14 (1994) nr. 2 pages 43-52
Year: 1994-01-14
Contents: Children's storybooks are one means by which children learn and develop attitudes towards grandparents and older adults in general. A total of 37 children's storybooks copyrighted from 1985 to 1990, were reviewed to explore how grandmothers and grandfathers are depicted. This was a follow-up study to a review of 73 books copyrighted from 1966 to 1984. Although in this present study the grandparent characters were still depicted in stereotypic terms, the grandmother figures demonstrated more modernization in hair style and clothing. There were very few minority grandparents represented. The storybooks continued to reflect society's perception of grandmothers and grandfathers. The implications from this study has particular relevance for gerontological educators who are in positions in which they can combat ageism. Educators need to be cognizant that attitudes toward the elderly and aging develop early and, once formed, influence thoughts and behavior in adulthood.
