Contents: Although providing primary care for an increasing number of elderly patients, most community physicians have had no geriatric training during their medical education. A survey was carried out to evaluate knowledge about basic health care for the elderly by physicians in Israel. Responding physicians had an average percent correct of 62% on functional evaluation items and 50% on clinical geriatrics items; 73% would consider a geriatric consultation for matters of insti-tutionalization, whereas only 23% would consider it for clinical problems of their elderly patients. There were no differences in results between those who participated in previous geriatric educational activities and those who did not. Training programs to enhance knowledge of geriatrics should be systematically developed and offered to as many community physicians as possible.
