Inhoud: Although gerontology has made great strides in the past few years, new and innovative programming for senior citizen populations is still being explored. In the spring of 1977, an attempt to present a dynamic new activity resulted in an outdoor, recreational Senior Olympics. The exciting success of this program created an enormous demand for the annual event as well as for the documentation of "how to" produce similar programs. The recreational Senior Olympics is a unique, creative, and stimulating project. It encourages individuals fifty-five and older to become actively involved in a day of planned physical "play." The entire emphasis and purpose of the program is to participate and enjoy! Contestants are gently urged to compete within their individual abilities. This article outlines step-by-step guidelines for the organizer of a recreational Senior Olympics. Beginning with the numerous "pre-olympic" plans, the reader is given a complete and comprehensive guide. Olympic game examples, rules, equipment and supplies are clearly demonstrated. The comprehensive pre-program planning timeframe will ensure a program which will gain rave reviews for its organizers. A specific and detailed evaluation questionnaire is also included as a wrap-up to the.day7s events. The program is cost-efficient. It may be custom tailored to fit the needs of various senior citizen populations such as active senior citizen centers, residential facilities, and nursing homes. The anicle details a tested and tightly organized program which will afford seniors an exciting day of active participation.
