Inhoud: Geothermal data of the Caucasian regions indicates that temperatures and temperature gradients are determined by the characteristics of the stratigraphic sections. The greatest increase in the geothermal gradient occurs in argillaceous sections of the Maykopian and Sarmatian. Temperatures decrease where these rocks become more sandy or where the section consists of good heat conductors such as sands, sandstone, marls metamorphics, or crystalline rocks. Higher temperatures occur where insulating rocks such as claystones or shales prevent flow of heat to the surface. Such regions are considered to be geothermally closed in contrast to geothermally open areas where flow of heat to the surface is unimpeded. Geoisotherm maps show structural features relatively well and anticlinal uplifts are marked by highs caused by heat flow from adjacent synclinal troughs. The geothermal characteristics of the different parts of the area are discussed with respect to lithology and structure. J. H. Redden
