Inhoud: Consideration is given to some geochemical aspects of volcanic sedimentation from the viewpoint of comparative lithology. Attention if focused on the origin of geosynclinal bauxites and the differentiation of Al, Fe, and Ti during migration from terrestial volcanic tenous into marine environments. Type examples are taken from the Kamchatka and Kurile Islands. It is shown that Al, Fe, and Ti are leached from unconsolidated tuffs by highly acidic circulating waters exposed to furnorolic gases. First Ti02 , then much of the Fe203 are effectively removed from surface-flowing waters by an increase in pH and decrease in temperature. Al203 is precipitated in marine waters because of their high pH, but it is thought to combine rather completely with available Si02 to form anthigenic clays. To call upon such a volcanic source of Al203 to explain the origin of geosynclinal bauxites is erroneous. The processes involved in the mixing of acid effluents with sea water are shown to be more complicated than mere dilution. They involve neutralization and hydrolization of acid chlorides and sulphates, as well as dilution. Such processes are so rapid and complete that widespread action by acid effluents in sea water should be uncommon. R. C. Epis
