The project being reported in this article represented an effort to more thoroughly infuse technology into the undergraduate curriculum for prospective mathematics teachers, while strengthening the relationships that already existed between the university and its partnership public schools. A key component of the project was the use of mobile wireless technologies (computer and telephone), allowing pre-service and in-service mathematics teachers to be nearly anywhere and receive information, collaboration and support using productivity tools and Web resources. Usage data and survey results were used in order to address the primary questions of the investigation: Would the handheld PC be used in place of the desktop computer, or simply as a supplement? Which features of the handheld PC would prove most useful? Would there be a distinct difference in usage between pre-service and in-service teachers? The study concluded that mobile computing technology was used as a supplement to desktop technology, Web-browsing was by far the most useful feature, and the difference was clear-cut between pre-service and in-service adoption and employment of the mobile technologies. |
