Considerations in the Preparation of Library Exhibits Featuring Rare Books and Manuscripts

Title: Considerations in the Preparation of Library Exhibits Featuring Rare Books and Manuscripts
Author: Visser, Michelle
Appeared in: College and undergraduate libraries
Paging: Volume 11 (2004) nr. 2 pages 51-62
Year: 2004-12-21
Contents: Most libraries have an exhibit area with rotating displays highlighting the library's holdings. Many displays do not feature rare or unique materials but those that do raise a host of special issues and concerns. Unfortunately, libraries often operate under time, staffing, and budget constraints that make achieving ideal exhibit conditions for these materials nearly impossible. In an effort to help librarians make informed decisions about the safe display of unique materials, this paper examines the following issues: materials selection and duration of exhibits, environmental conditions, security, display methods and materials, and record-keeping.
