Recently a proliferation of clinical, theoretical, and descriptive reports have emphasized the role of informal and formal social support in reducing the burden and strain that accompanies caregiving responsibilities for dementia patients. However, what is lacking in the literature is the information regarding how caregivers perceive and assess their support group experiences. Using both quantitative and qualitative data from a nationwide sample of caregivers, information regarding the positive and negative assessment of support groups are presented. The group factors of universalify, group cohesiveness, and imparting of knowledge were assessed to be positive features of support groups. The group factors of content of meetings, logistics, and emotions/feelings were assessed as negative features of support groups. Discussion and implications of findings are addressed.
