There are strong suggestions in the literature that nursing home employees may not be properly trained to deal with the behavioral problems of geriatric residents. The present results support this conclusion. Social service/activity directors and nurse aides were found to do poorly on a test (The Behavioral Knowledge Questionnaire) which purports to measure one's skills at working with this population. Their performance was found to be relatively independent of knowledge about the aging process per se. Finally, it was suggested that the instrument be utilized in in-service training with these groups. |
