Neuropsychological tests have not been standardized for use with older patients, and existing tests may not be suitable for them. Pragmatic considerations in developing neuropsychological tests for an older population include level of difficulty, length, the speed factor and physical requirements. There are also methodological and conceptual problems involved: population and sample selection, diagnostic validity and age sensitivity, the effect of test modifications on construct measurement, and comprehensiveness versus redundancy. A program to modify the Halstead-Reitan Neuropsychological Battery for use with older adults is described to illustrate these issues and possible solutions. |
