This study addressed two issues regarding hypochondriasis of later life: (1) whether this disorder is related more to psychopathology or health problems; and (2) the relationship of hypochondriasis to other later-life problems of anxiety, depression and paranoid reactions. Sixty later-life (>55) psychiatric inpatients were given a battery of psychological scales: MMPI-Pa (Harris-Lingoes subscales), State-Trait Anxiety Scale, Beck Depression Inventory (somatic and psychological components), Life Satisfaction Inventory (LSI-Z), a pain intensity scale, and a special hypochondriasis scale, Hypochondriasis Scale (Institutional Geriatric) (HSIG). They were also rated on health and behavior. Results revealed that hypochondriacal attitudes are related to both psychopathology and health variables. A regression analysis using the HSIG as the dependent variable revealed that trait anxiety accounted for the majority of the variance, but percent of pain (health-related variable) also contributed to this equation. Finally, results show that hypochondriasis is related to anxiety, depression and paranoid thmking. The HSIG also correlates highly (inversely) with life satisfaction, but not behavior.
