Inhoud: Elderly men who live alone are at increased risk for loss of independence. Hospitalization, in particular, often marks the transition from independent living to long term institutional care. This study examines the relationship of rehabilitation admission to the subsequent function of elderly men and their ability to return home to live alone. The men in the study (N = 54) were admitted to a geriatric rehabilitation unit at a large urban medical center. Subject data were collected using several standardized assessments including the Functional Independence Measure, the Mattis Dementia Rating Scale, and the Geriatric Depression Scale. Results showed that physical function improved significantly for the total sample between admission and discharge, and was significantly higher for the group of men that returned home alone (in contrast to the non-live alone group). The men who returned to live alone also reported significantly greater independence than their non-live alone counterparts in a variety of ADL and IADL skills. It was also noteworthy that the group of men who did not return home to live alone were depressed, as measured by the Geriatric Depression Scale at discharge and at 3 and 6 months follow-up. The live alone men were not depressed. These data show that relatively small changes in physical ability, cognition and depression are associated with relatively major functional outcomes, i.e., independence versus institutional care.
