  Detection of Geriatric Depression

Titel: Detection of Geriatric Depression
Auteur: Boey, Kam Weng
Verschenen in: Clinical gerontologist
Paginering: Jaargang 20 (1999) nr. 2 pagina's 47-56
Jaar: 1999-02-02
Inhoud: The purpose of this study was to examine practices carried out by nurses in assessing elderly patients for depression. Nurses (N = 221) from various departments of a public hospital in Hong Kong were invited to participate in a questionnaire survey on a voluntary basis. The results of this study confirmed previous findings that the majority of nurses (68%) did not conduct assessments for depression in elderly patients, even though they had a good knowledge of the symptoms of geriatric depression and held a relatively positive attitude towards the depressed elderly. Perceived incompetence and the constraints of working conditions were the major deterring factors in assessing elderly patients for depression. Among nurses who assessed depression, very few used objective clinical tools. The implications of the findings for clinical practice are also discussed in this study.
