The Aberrant Behavior Checklist-Community (ABC-C) was administered to four groups of older individuals (mean age = 79.35 years): those with (a) dual diagnosis of mental retardation and mental illness (n = 35); (b) mental illness only (n = 59); (c) mental retardation only (n = 20); and (d) neither mental retardation nor mental illness (n = 58). Individuals with dual diagnosis were rated significantly higher, suggesting more psychopathology, than those in the other three groups which did not differ from one another. Compared to individuals not receiving psychotropic medication, those on medication had consistently higher ratings. Younger individuals tended to be rated higher than older ones. Men were rated higher than women but only on the Hyperactivity/Noncompliance scale. There were no significant interaction effects on any of the analyses. The Lethargy/ Social Withdrawal scale was the least discriminating of the five scales with this population of older individuals. The data are consistent with previous findings on the ABC-C and add to the normative base of the instrument. They suggest that the ABC-C can be used as a measure of problem behaviors with older people. |
