The subjects of this study were first time elderly patients (N =203, mean age = 68.8) who attended a mental health center in Shanghai. It was found that the elderly kept their problems within the immediate family and tended to delay psychiatric consultation for a long period. Prior to psychiatric consultation, they sought help from Western-style physicians or Chinese herbalists. Most elderly were referred by their children for treatment of sleep disturbance or paranoid ideations. Not knowing the psychiatric nature of their problems, stigmatization, and distrust of psychiatric services were found to have prevented the elderly from seeking early psychiatric treatment. |
