This study was designed to examine relationships among measures of stressful life events, depression, and the perceived stressfulness of rheumatoid disease. Forty-nine VA outpatients with diagnosed rheumatoid arthritis were assessed by two trained clinicians. Findings were that measures of depression and stressful life events were relatively uncorrelated with each other, but each type of measure was significantly correlated with the perceived stress of the disease process. Thus, arthritis stress appears to be predicted by the intensity of both depression and recent stressors. Implications for clinical practice and future research are discussed. |
