It is a feature which requires information professionals to have expertise in retrieval, subject cataloging, classification, indexing and systems design. This essay examines the knowledge base needed for professional careers in the subject control of information. It identifies some of the problems involved in educating and training graduates for working in this area and attempts to pose some solutions to these problems.
