The major barriers to effective subject access in anthropology are the incredible diversity of its subject matter and the elusive nature of its terminology. After a discussion of these and other problems, criteria are outlined for a truly effective subject access scheme for anthropology, followed by a critique of several existing subject access schemes based on these criteria. The results of this analysis indicate that none of these schemes adequately addresses these problems. The article concludes with the presentation of a preliminary framework for a faceted subject access scheme that the author believes has the potential to dramatically improve subject access to the anthropological literature. |
