A journey through the landmark social science encyclopedias-the Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences (1930-1935), the International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences (1968), and the International Encyclopedia of the Social & Behavioral Sciences (2001)-reveals a startling gap in the coverage of education in the 1968 work. Education is almost totally excluded from the International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences. The variation in attention accorded to education in the iterations of these interdisciplinary reference works highlights changes within the discipline of education itself and the changing relationship between education and the social sciences over the past seventy-five years. |
