Among the issues that confront prisons are their growth, their cost, the influx of mentally ill inmates, the need for addiction treatment, high recidivism rates, and the large number of expected releases. Despite a critical need to use available resources to resolve these issues, prison officials treat one such resource, their libraries, as though they were insignificant and dispensable. Library service for correctional staff, increased research into prison librarianship, and a working relationship with public libraries are ways the prison library can become part of the effort to enhance public safety.
