This study examines references from three journals, Communication Monographs, Communication Research, and Journal of Communication, for the years 1985, 1995, and 2005 to investigate the role of the scholarly monograph in the discipline of communication. The authors found that both the percentage of references to monographs and the average number of monograph references per article dropped between 1995 and 2005. The authors looked at the distribution of monograph references by date and found that over fifty percent of the references are to monographs published in the previous fifteen years. In 2005 there was a noticeable drop in the number of references to monographs published in the previous 5 years. The ratio of commercial publishers to university presses in the referenced monographs has remained steady throughout the 1985, 1995, and 2005 articles. The most frequently referenced monographs in the 1995 and 2005 journal articles were published in the previous ten to twenty years. The authors conclude that there has been a decline in monograph use by communication scholars.
