Developments in librarianship have tended to ignore the requirements of social scientists. They are expected to fit their needs to a style of service better suited to chemists or physicists. The subject matter, research methods and styles of information-seeking in the social sciences all differ from those found elsewhere, but little account has been taken of this in the design of information systems. As a result, information retrieval is difficult and communications inefficient. One means of easing these problems is through the use of specialist intermediaries, linking sources and users. This article discusses the benefits resulting from their introduction in an academic environment. It is based on British experience, where such intermediaries (known as Information Officers) have been employed since the sixties. |
