Recurring festivals were established at a rapid rate in rural South Carolina during the 1970s and 1980s, and at least 161 were staged in 1989. Although festival growth slowed in the late 1980s, raising questions about long-term trends, festivals are now being staged in all of the state's counties and one-fourth of its named rural places. They are presented most frequently in April, May, and October, tend to last only a day or two, and are normally scheduled for weekends and holidays. Inexpensive, family-oriented events and attractions dominate festival programs, the mainstays of which are food and beverage concessions, music, dancing, and other live entertainment, arts and crafts, games, contests, and parades. Since venues must be automobile-convenient, spacious, and inexpensive, the main activity hubs are streets, schools, and related public property.
