We examined the relationship between socioeconomic status (SES) and perinatal complications. Orthogonal comparisons showed low-SES children to have significantly greater numbers of complications related to prenatal care, conditions of labor and delivery, gestational age at birth, and birth weight. A stepwise discriminant analysis indicated that, on the basis of perinatal complications alone, lower SES children were differentiated from higher SES children with clinical levels of accuracy. Moreover, a multiple-regression analysis indicated that 27% of the variance in SES was shared with a linear composite of perinatal information. The results support the hypothesis of an interaction between perinatal complications and socioeconomic factors and suggest the utility of structured maternal reports of perinatal information. |
