Contents: Two experiments investigated the impact of affect-relevant and behavior-relevant information on undermining social stereotypes. In Experiment 1, we manipulated the accessibility of affect-relevant or behavior-relevant information in participants' stereotypes about two target groups. We then presented information that was inconsistent with participants' beliefs about the group's feelings or information that was inconsistent with their beliefs about the group's behaviors. Participants' willingness to apply their stereotypes was undermined the most when the inconsistent information presented was most directly relevant to the information made accessible in their stereotypes. This effect also generalized to other affective and behavioral aspects of the stereotypes about which participants did not receive any information. In Experiment 2, participants read affect-relevant or behavior-relevant inconsistent information about an affective (priests) or a behavioral (politicians) target group. Once again, participants were less willing to apply their stereotypes about the groups when the inconsistent information received was most directly relevant to the nature of the target group participants read about.
