Inhoud: Although work has been done on the accuracy of stereotypes themselves, much less has focused on the accuracy of the perceptions of these stereotypes either by the stereotyped group itself or by members of a third group. Stereotypes of women, business students, and students from different geographical regions were investigated. We asked members of one group to report their beliefs about another group. We then asked members of the second (stereotyped) group or members of a third group to fill out the same questionnaire as they thought a member of the first, stereotyping group would respond. Subjects made their estimates by giving percentages of a target group and percentages of a comparison group that possessed stereotype-consistent characteristics. In all cases, groups overestimated the degree to which they or a third group were perceived as different. Possible causes and social consequences of the results are discussed.
