Within a multicultural society the existence of a multiplicity of languages can be both an advantage and a source of tension and conflict. This becomes particularly clear when the issue of language policies is discussed. Language policies often involves educational issues, specifically the selection of a language of learning in schools. This issue has for a great part been a contentious issue in the history of education in South Africa, and since the new political dispensation came into being in South Africa, this debate has been started afresh with a new vigour. |
