Inhoud: The benefits of learning languages in Tandem have now been well publicised, and the Tandem course unit at Manchester has become highly successful and very popular. However, up to now the learning tasks devised for this programme, whilst offering students a degree of freedom and choice, have nevertheless been 'task directed'; students used language to achieve genuine communicative goals, but there has been limited scope for original thinking or the development of analytical skills. For the 2001/2002 academic year, we re-engineered the programme so that students are now encouraged to engage much more actively in the learning process by undertaking a number of language research tasks in collaboration with their partners. These tasks allow students to become more active learners; they now have an opportunity to negotiate and to work towards shared goals, to be innovative, to collect and analyse original language data, and to draw their own conclusions from their work. This paper gives a description of the new tasks together with an account of the theoretical perspectives underpinning their design. It then moves on to discuss the outcomes of the project, focussing on both the processes and the products of the learning.
