Standard flat-bundle cotton-fibre-tenacity determinations require that masses of specimens be known. These masses are normally measured on a standard balance. Eliminating the balance measurement for reasons of instrument automation and speed of measurement is desirable. The attenuation of a laser light beam incident on the specimen is examined as an alternative method for determining a flat-bundle mass. The area of light attenuation obtained from a scan is chosen to be the first-order parameter most responsive to mass. Data derived from optical-response scans are compared with actual balance-determined masses. Factors contributing to errors are discussed. |
