A theoretical analysis of the nature of non-isothermal flow in beds of drying loose-fibre assemblies indicates that the bed structure is sufficiently open for the air velocities normally encountered in industrial dryers to result in non-laminar flow. Experiments are reported that support this deduction and indicate that, under industrial conditions, the viscosity effects on the resistance of the beds to flow are negligible and the pressure drop due to flow is practically proportional to the square of the air velocity. |
