This paper examines the progress or regress of the countries of South Asia in achieving Millennium Development Goal 1. The eight countries of South Asia are Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. A comparative analysis shows how each of the eight countries of South Asia is faring in the achievement of Millennium Development Goal 1. The multidimensional aspects of poverty, including social, political, environmental, economic and religious factors, are considered. Each country is examined for factors affecting poverty such as topography, population, economy, access to water, adequate nutrition and sanitation, and disaster impacts.
