The conundrum of democracy involves a complex reality of people's participation in self-government. This implies a sense of values, responsibility and commitment against the persistence of atavistic chimeras that thwart equality, justice and freedom -the three pillars of human dignity. Today democracy is challenged on its own turf; its strengths - self-determination, majority rule, and unrestrained liberty - seem to undermine its vitality. The paradox of democratic experience in a developing nation like India has far-reaching global ramifications. This article briefly critiques India's post-independence ordeal as a democratic nation. |
